This particular model is extra finicky about USB cables, it needs one that is not too long and/or with ferrites in the ends, likely due to power draw being high as it is an old device. Identifies to sane as a plustek, and has been working over a decade. Just plug and play once you have a working cable.

For my N650U the only way to scan under the last 4 versions of Ubuntu is to attach it to Virtualbox/Vmware so it is "initialised" by MS Windows Canon drivers (or Win7 built-in driver), then detach from the VM. I then can use it with any scan software in Linux. Fully functional until you reboot or unplug the device physically. It seems MS Windows kick starts it to run some sort of self test, then it's ready to use.

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS.
Plugging the scanner in, and it's right there.
I have tried many different adjustments that all seem to work flawlessly.
No extras needed.

Flawlessly as a "plustek"-device.

It just ain't working. I also tested it on Ubuntu to the same result. It's recognized correctly by the system but when trying to scan it makes grinding noises.
