Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH has announced the major release of its open-source email security solution Proxmox Mail Gateway 5.0

The Proxmox Mail Gateway is a full featured mail proxy deployed between the firewall and the internal mail server and protects against all email threats focusing on spam, viruses, trojans, and phishing emails. Version 5.0 is now completely open-source and licensed under the GNU AGPL v3.

The Mail Gateway is a complete operating system based on Debian Stretch 9.3 with a 4.13.13 kernel, and has a new RESTful API, includes support for all ZFS raid levels, comes with LDAP, IPv4 and IPv6 support, and with a new interface framework based on Sencha ExtJS. For businesses Proxmox offers a new subscription-based support model with access to a stable enterprise repository.

New Proxmox Mail Gateway is Open-Source (AGPL,v3)
With the new Mail Gateway version 5.0 the company Proxmox has changed the license of it’s email security solution and it is now completely open-source, licensed under the GNU Affero GPL, v3. The anti-spam and anti-virus filtering solution includes the full feature-set like high performance and multi-threaded anti-virus engines, countless spam filtering methods, a message tracking center, a unique object-oriented rule system, user management and LDAP, HA clustering functionality (master/slave synchronization via SSH tunnel), an interface for end-user spam quarantine, and many more features.

With the license change to the free, copy-left open-source license AGPL, the Proxmox Mail Gateway now offers the same open-source development model and ecosystem like the company’s well known Proxmox VE, an open-source platform for enterprise virtualization: The source code of the Mail Gateway is available in the public GIT, issues can be reported in the bug tracker, the channel to discuss and share knowledge is the community forum.

The change in licensing also comes with a new support model. Instead of the former annual licensing model which included technical support, the company Proxmox now offers a subscription-based support model. A commercial subscription – recommended for production use – provides access to the stable enterprise package repository and to technical email support. Various subscription levels ranging from community to premium are available starting at EUR 99 for an annual community subscription.

New Framework for web-based management Interface
With Proxmox Mail Gateway 5.0 the web-based management interface has been completely re-worked and is now based on the Sencha ExtJS framework. With the integrated, central web interface users can access and control all configuration and management tasks such as incoming and outgoing mail traffic, the object-oriented rule system, the message tracking center including all logs and reports, the end-user quarantine web interface, user management, backup/restore, and high availability clustering. Dashboards and statistics provide a quick overview for the IT staff easing their control tasks. If desired advanced tasks can be executed on the command line too.

Integrated Reference Documentation
Proxmox Mail Gateway brings a new documentation framework integrated into the GUI which provides a global help function. Users can access and download the technical documentation via the central help-button (available in various formats like html, pdf and epub). A main asset of the new documentation is that it’s always version specific to the current user’s software version. The new reference documentation is created from man pages which are auto-generated based on the code. The help content itself is written by the developers via comments in the code and is generated using asciiDoc. To participate in the documentation project users can send a patch to the project and propose new content.

Other Notable Changes in Proxmox Mail Gateway 5.0
Other new features in Proxmox Mail Gateway 5.0 include support for all ZFS raid levels in the ISO installer, LDAP, IPv4 and IPv6 support, ClamAV with Google Safe Browsing database, and one click updates via GUI.

Installation
Proxmox Mail Gateway is a bare-metal ISO install with an installation wizard that automatically installs and configures all necessary components on the host and thus eliminates manual installation configuration. The ISO installer supports all ZFS raid levels for data protection. The Mail Gateway can be installed on dedicated hardware or in a virtual machine on all major virtualization solutions and also on top of Debian Stretch. The customized Proxmox Linux kernel contains all necessary drivers for qemu/KVM (virtio), VMware tools or Hyper-V integration services.

Availability
The Proxmox Mail Gateway is licensed under the free software license GNU Affero GPL, v3. Proxmox Mail Gateway 5.0 is available as ISO install containing the full feature-set and can be downloaded at https://www.proxmox.com. Professional support subscriptions starts at EUR 99 per host and year for unlimited users are available from Proxmox. A commercial subscription enables access to the enterprise package repository with regular updates via GUI and is recommended for production use.

An inplace-upgrade from Proxmox Mail Gateway 4 to 5 is not possible. Users of the Proxmox Mail Gateway 4.x can backup/restore the rule database and email statistic from PMG 4 to 5.
