qn about partitioning

I've got a friend who wants to install GNU/Linux but his hard disk is entirely occupied by 1 NTFS partition, as it is with all default Windows installations. How can I extract space from his NTFS partition and format it in ext3 for GNU/Linux.

Apologies for those regular members who are for ever answering the 'same old questions' from newbies but. . . . ! I'm a techcie by trade with Windows etc so know a bit, but fancied a go with Linux as I am bored silly with Windows after using various incarnation of it over the last 10 years.

I'm very new to this, I would like to figure out how to get Mandrake 10. 1 installed. I downloaded it and I think I made the disk correctly. I used Roxio's disk creator and burned a disk from an image file.

Here is an update on my SUSE 9. 3 Pro installation. Seems that I had messed some things up, so I decided to do a reinstall, possibly correcting some of my mistakes. While I was at it, I thought I'd give RAID one more try.

I have a new Foxconn 755A01-6EKRS motherboard which claims to have a 10/100/1000 Fast Gigabit Ethernet port from Realtek in it. However Linux (Fedora Core 4 and Gentoo Live CD 2004. 3) only sees it as a 10/100.

Gigabit NIC's with Jumbo frame support on Linux?

Just discovered that my new Linksys EG1032 Gigabit PCI Network Adapters DO NOT offer linux support and that Linksys has no plans to support it in the future. Does anyone know of a Gigabit NIC that runs on Linux that supports Jumbo packets? Any help appreciated T.

I'm attempting to install linux on an old HP Vectra 500 which orginally had Win95. The box has a P1 processor with 48 Mb ram and a 1. 2 gig HD. I've partitioned the HD with partition magic with a 300 Mb Dos partition (fresh install of Win95), a 200 Mb Linux swap partition, and the remainder as a linux partition.

how can i make the system use the swap. . . i have 2gb memory and when using rsync, free memmory goes down to 8mb and swap usage is 0 (2 x 2048mb allocated swap). . . the pc really slows down. . . how can i make the system utilize the swap?.
