Linux recognizes the player as two usb-storage drives (one for the internal 32MB memory, the other for the external SmartMedia card).

On SuSE Linux systems at least 7.2 and up, you do not have to re-compile the kernel.
On my system, I access the internal memory as /dev/sdb1, and the external memory as /dev/sdb5 (my Zip drive uses /dev/sda).
