Well, I never got the USB/Firewire working, but I opened the case, and inside is an IDE DVDRW+/- device. I put the IDE drive in my system and it worked great. About 20min to burn 4GB of data. Not exactly what the manufacturer intends, but it does work if you need to use one and don't mind taking it apart and not using USB.

Able to read/write DVD's via USB2.0 port. However, for DVD writing, it is very slow (1 1/2 hour to write a disc). DVD playback is very choppy as well. DVD-RW writing is very unreliable on Memorex DVD-RW discs. Normal CD burning is pretty fast, though.
OS distribution I am using is Fedora Core 1.
