ac'97

please tell me what are the steps i need to take in order to have sound on debian(sid). i have an ac'97 on board chip. i tried to install alsa with apt-get but there are more than 1 things named alsa.

What kernel are you running? What Desktop? for some reason debian gnome sets teh mixer to mute. Does sound work as root? Check permisions on the mixer in /dev and add your user to teh audio group.
 
I suggest getting the latest 2.6.x kernel it has also in there already among other goodies.

at the moment i have the 2.4 kernel ...
i use kde ....but i login from gnome and choose kde
beacuse this seems to be the only way to do that...the onnly way i can start kde ( don't know why)
there is no sound in root nor anywhere else.
