Suse Linux 9.1 & ATI Install Problems

Has anyone been able to install a Linux (Suse 9. 1 Pro) distribution with an ATI X800 Pro? My attempts end with a hang on hardware detection. I was partially successful once with a manual install, but video was ugly in VESA mode.

Has anyone been able to install a Linux (Suse 9.1 Pro) distribution with an ATI X800 Pro? My attempts end with a hang on hardware detection. I was partially successful once with a manual install, but video was ugly in VESA mode. Once again, could not detect the video card. And to top that all off, It wouldn\'t recognize my LG Flatron L1920P monitor. Another aborted installation. Here\'s a quick and dirty on my setup;

Intel 3.4 ghz (not extreme, sigh)
MSI 875P NEO Motherboard
Auidgy 2 ZS
ATI X800 Pro
1 Gig Kingston HyperX (dual channel configuration)
Twin Seagate SATA drives (not in RAID configuration)

Help and suggestions are really appreciated.

ok, if i install SuSE linux on a computer (dell with ati mach 64 VT videocard) the first 5 - 10 minutes the videocard is good and then it's going sooo ugly.
System specs (on work):
- Dell (no known product name or type number)
- 333 MHz
- 512 MB RAM
- 3 x Seagate St19171W 9.1 GB HDD
- Ati mach 64 VT Videocard

I hope anyone can help me.

Greetz,

ATI makes great cards... for Windows. There is some ATI support for Linux but not nearly to the degree we get support from Nvidia. I have nine Linux boxes I administer. All use Nvidia except my old first computer which uses an old Mach64, (under SuSE 9.1).

This may be some help...

My advice is generally to always go with Nvidia unless you just enjoy the challenge of getting newer ATIs working. Oh, and welcome!
