Hello i was courious to know exactly what nvidia card your using and how you decide what drivers to download? I am new to linux and am currently running 8. 0 and seem to be having some problems with my video card (PNY GFORCE4 TI4400) and display settings.

I am new to linux and am currently running 8.0 and seem to be having some problems with my video card (PNY GFORCE4 TI4400) and display settings. I.E. When i change my display settings to any other setting then 16 bit color and 800x600 and reboot (log_on/log_off) X fails to load.
I have also heard that Red Hat is not friendly with the Nforce chip set is there any truth to this?

I have the Visiontek GeForce 3 and my motherboard is of the nforce chipset. I've never had any problems from any distro. Your problem sounds to me like you didn't set up your monitor frequencies correctly when you setup X. Check the manufacturer site for details involving horizontal and vertical refresh rates. If during setup you didn't specify the correct values, when you try to change the resolution it might not work. Also get the drivers from nvidia's website, and get the tar.gz files instead of the .rpm packages. Follow the doc's on nvidia's site and let me know if you still have issues.
send me a copy of your /etc/X11/XF86Config file and I can take a look at it for you.

Your first issue is if your not going to install the drivers from nvidia's site, your driver section should look like the following:

If this is the case then i am sure i have other problems because when ever i change the driver to anything other then vesa “X” fails to start and i am back to square one.
Now after i installed
(edfile:/home/HALO/NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-3123.rh73up_2.4.18_10.i686.rpm)
and then
(file:/home/HALO/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-3123.tar.gz)
i was only at that point able to assign my mointior and resoultion settings. i am still unable to change to 24 bit color without x failing.
I found this link http://www.linuxiso.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1959 and tried what it suggested prior to my searching for help here.

you should really use the NVIDIA-kernel.tar.gz file instead of the rpms. Like the first post there says. Also at the end of the XF86Config-4 file where it says:

To check 3d performance just open up a terminal window and type :
glxgears
You should get a fps of at least 2000. What is the issue with your zip drive???

sorry can't help you there. If you would have said internal or parallel, maybe but I think you might want to start with making sure usb-mass storage is enabled in your kernel.

However, from the console, it's pretty easy. Make sure you exit out of any chroot's or mounts, PUT A DISK IN THE DRIVE and type: "modprobe usb-storage". Then mount to /mnt and/or chroot /mnt. You should have a zip directory already in your /mnt dir, otherwise mkdir one. Then type: "mount -t vfat /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip" you should now be able to go to /mnt/zip and read your disk. Incidentally, if you have an Iomega Peerless USB drive, it's usually seen as sdb4. I'm not sure why, but Linux sees USB storage devices as SCSI devices, either way - it works! should the sda/b4 not work, try other #'s, but I've seen it consistantly choose the # 4 for both of my drives in Mandrake 9 and RH8.
