centos4.1 hangs on install on proliant ML350, hangs on loading CCISS

Hello, I am trying to install centos4. 1 on a Compaq Proliant ML350 G2. After booting off the disc, it gets stuck on the loading cciss driver. The server consist of 3 compaq hot plug SCSI drives and a smart array 532 controller.

Mandriva 2005 LE - non Responsive Package Installation

Hello all, I am very new to Linux, I am currently having an issue with Mandriva 2005 LE (DVD) I have gotten the OS installed np, everything seems to work ok, cept the Package Updater, when I am installing packages, it downloads them, starts installing the selected updates/fixes ect.

resizing LVM partitions

I'm using FC4 which uses the LVM system. I need to free up some space so that I can install another OS. How do I go about doing this, since I cant use Parted or any tools like that. .

can someone explain tar.gz files

I've been downloading some games for my kids. Some of them are tar. gz files, how do I get the game to install in SuSE 9. 3? I would like to make the games available system wide. RPM files are easy, I just open a terminal and su yast2 -i <filename>.

Best Book for Linux Cert/learning?

I was just wondering what you opinion(s) are for the best book on learning/training for a linux cert, either redhat or linux+. Just getting some ideas. I'm gearing up for some MCP's, but I would also like to get a nice foundation in linux.

I have Actiontec modem serial. OS: Rh Fedora Core 4. 0 The os has recognised the modem. i have made the connection. wehn i connect. it gives me error PPP connection any idea. Do i use CHAP or other thing.

Installation problems

I am trying to install installed Suse on my computer that I have dual booting with Windows. Every time I select the Suse boot option it initializing hardware then starting sysem, then starting devices, and while it says starting devices the screen goes black and it freezes up.

ihad a sound problem in debian and fedora core 2. it goes like this, everytime i login to root i get this prblem: Sound server informational message: Error while initializing the sound driver: device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such device.

ok let me explain from the beginning. i am a windows user and i decided to try linux out. so i got the ubuntu distro and installed it on my backup hard drive. everything worked just fine. BUT. i decided that i didn't want linux on that hd anymore so i tried to uninstall it.

how to install linux on a i486 with bios not supporting cdrom boot

Hi, I am new to this, I have a machine i486 with trigem bios of 1990. My problem is that i want to install mandrake / knoppix on this system but the bios does not support cdrom booting. also the machine does not have a floppy drive.

Unable to boot Linux Mandrake from CD

I copied 3CD's from a DVD supplied by APC magazine. As advised, I copied all 3 CD's to my hard drive as ISO files(Whatever they are). I opened each file and used a program called undisker to copy the individual files to a CD.

Resolution problems - after installing mandrake10 in vmware 5

I am installing Mandrake in vmware 5 on a IBM t41 laptop - 2G memory. After installing all seems to go ok - after install completes, the session boots the splash screen and seems to load properly but after the splash screen the monitor is fuzzy (typical of resolution issues) and looks to be split into two screens.

I recently downloaded FC4 and I must say that I love it generally. It was hard to initially install because I have 3 hard drives (SATA containing the Windows partition) and I wanted to place FC4 on the 3rd hard drive or the last hard drive in the boot order in the BIOS.
