Setup modem connection to internet problem

Background: I have a Compaq Presario SR1020NX. I had connected to my university ISP and all was fine. I bought RedHat Enterprise Linux 3 and installed it. Problem: The hardward browser (scanner) does not find a modem.

Network here one min gone the next

my workgroup was available one minute and gone the next (after a couple of changes). before, i could see my xp machines from suse but not my suse from the xp's. i tried to get an xp to join the suse domain but it said domain controller not available.

Mandrake 9.1 on a WinXP Network

I am new to linux and just downloaded and installed Mandrake on my computer in a Windows network. I'm very happy with the installation but now face a new challange.
