KDE 4.0 Beta 4 has been released. Here the release announcement:

The KDE Community is happy to release the fourth Beta for KDE 4.0. This Beta aimed at further polishing of the KDE codebase and we would love to start receiving feedback from testers.

As KDE has largely has been in bugfix mode, this latest Beta aims to encourage testers to have a look at it to help us find and solve the remaining problems and bugs. Besides the stabilization of the codebase, some minor features have been added, including but not limited to much work on Plasma, the KDE 4 desktop shell.

Sebastian Kügler notes: "The improvements have been huge, and plasma is much closer to what it needs to be before the release. I am confident we will be able to finish it and present a very usable plasma to our userbase with KDE 4.0. We will then be able to extend on that and present truly innovative desktop interfaces throughout the KDE 4 lifecycle.

The new Beta 4 incorporates many improvements from previous Beta and alpha releases: Beta 3, Beta 2, Beta 1, Alpha 2 and Alpha 1.

KDE 4.0 Beta1 has been released:

KDE Project Ships First Beta Release for Leading Free Software Desktop, Codename "Cnuth"

KDE 4.0 Beta 1 marks the stabilizing of foundations for the new major relea
se of KDE.

August 2, 2007 (The INTERNET). The KDE Community is happy to announce the immediate availability of the first Beta release for KDE 4.0. This release marks the beginning of the integration process which will bring the powerful new technologies included in the now frozen KDE 4 libraries to the applications.

Almost two months after the foundations of KDE 4 have been laid with the first alpha, KDE enters the stage of a full freeze of the library interface. From now on, the applications will focus on integrating the new technology refined during the last months, and the library developers will try to fix all bugs found during this process. No new applications will enter the official KDE modules and usability and accessibility work is of course an ongoing process. In the following weeks KDE developers will be able to add features to their applications until the next beta is released and the application features will be frozen as well.

K3b 1.0.3 has been released:

Back from my honeymoon I finally worked my work through the tons of emails which ended up in a new bugfix release for K3b. Hopefully it will be the last before the first 1.1 alpha.

* Reverted to old behaviour of reloading medium before verification. Not
enough testing had been done before introducing this and some systems fail to read the medium before reload (Bugs 147297, 147328, 147420, 147698).
* Do not crash when the currently playing audio project item is removed (Bug 147548).
* Added desktop actions to handle empty media with K3b.
* Fixed read retry when reading data tracks (Bug 147778).
* K3b's dialogs now honor the global button layout setting (Bug 147799).
* Do not crash on mp3 files without tags if compiled with taglib support (Bug 142651).
* Do not allow to copy a rewritable media to itself.
* Fixed crash on startup with devices that return bogus GET PERFORMANCE data (Bug 147676).

Get the sources from http://www.k3b.org. Mandriva Cooker packages will be up soon.

With the Sonnet library for KDE 4, developer Jacob Rideout hopes to reinvigorate the field of desktop linguistics by adding automatic language detection and other innovative features. Sonnet is to be for KDE 4 what KSpell 2 is for the current version of the K Desktop Environment, providing spellchecking facilities to applications as diverse as the Konqueror Web browser, Kopete instant messenger, and KWord office software. Unlike KSpell, however, it will also provide grammar checking, multilingual tools, and perhaps even translation, dictionary, and thesaurus functionality across all of KDE.

KDE 4's Sonnet will turbocharge language processing
