After a good summer of coding KTorrent is nearing a 1.1 release, so we have decided to release a 1.1rc1 version, so we can get a lot more people using ktorrent's newest features, which hopefully doesn't result in to many bug reports.

The main new features in this release are :

- More search engines.
- More information about a torrent is now shown at the bottom of the window.
- Video and audio files can now be previewed.
- Selecting which files to download of multifile torrents is now possible.
- Download speed capping (still jumpy and will be tweaked before the
final 1.1 release).
- Many bug fixes.

Code and binary packages can be found at http://ktorrent.pwsp.net/

Release of Boson 0.11, a Real Time Strategy (RTS) game for the K Desktop Environment.

For this release, the primary focus has been to finally get the release out ;-). For nearly the whole time since the last release in early 2004 both main Boson developers have been too busy with various non-Boson things to concentrate for long enough on an actual release. However during that time period new features got constantly added, so the list of changes is very long for this version.

Probably the most visible change is the port to libufo. libufo (http://libufo.sf.net) is a widget toolkit for OpenGL, that enables Boson to draw buttons, labels and other widgets directly into the OpenGL scene, instead of using a separated area. An installation of libufo is not necessary, as Boson provides its own copy of this library. Note that we still use both, KDE and Qt and will continue to do so. KDE and Qt are used in Boson for a lot of things, not only the GUI.

Basically, this is a tool to let you type an expression (including trig, exponential, or logarithmic) functions and get an answer, including a history pane, support for Radians and Degrees, and a very compact mode. Note on the recent RPN mode addition: abakus as of now doesn't have an persistent RPN mode value stack, so every expression you enter at this time has to result in exactly one value on the operand stack (e.g You can't do '2+' after entering an expression, you need 'ans 2 +').

The "KDE Disk archiver" (KDar) is a disk-based archiving and backup utility. It is built around the "disk archive library" by Denis Corbin, and is analogous to the tape archiver shell command "tar", but is more suited for backups onto disk-based media, such as CD-R, DVD, Jazz, Zip, other hard-drives, etc.

KDar can perform full and differential backups with or without compression. Archives can be split to fit various media types.

A filtering mechanism allows you to select which files and directories to backup or restore, and which files to compress.

Kat is a framework designed to allow KDE applications to index and retrieve files. Metadata, fulltext and thumbnails are extracted from documents, images, mp3 and other media allowing quick and accurate information retrieval. Kat is similar to the Windows applications WhereIsIt and Google Desktop Search, the Gnome program Beagle and the OS X utility Spotlight. It is completely written in C++, using Qt3, KDE and KIO libraries. The application is based on the extensible kfile plugin architecture of KDE in order to facilitate the creation of new media managers for emerging file formats. Kat is the first KDE application using the new fulltext kfile plugins. Information retrieval relies on the powerful SQLite3 embedded database engine.

Kalva 0.7.0 has been released

What's new in Version 0.7.0:
You can store your hardware profile and share it via www.kde-files.org. By providing your hardware profile you can help others who are new to recording with MEncoder. You can store your quality profile and share it via www.kde-files.org. This allows apart from other benefits to have more than one profile and per recording choose which MEncoder options will give the best results (f.i. if you want to record a 16/9 movie you need other options than for a 4/3 five minute toon for children). What was said about the hardware profile about sharing via www.kde-files.org applies even more on quality profiles. You can allready find some at www.kde-files.org You can configure if the preview window shall start in fullscreen or not. The play button now gives some valuable information on using the preview window which in fact is an external MPlayer. Apart from these outstanding changes there have been a lot of improvements and bugfixes concerning tooltips and geometry flaws.

The scantv plugin was redesigned to make sure that a failing scantv does not freeze Kalva anymore. The save dialog for the channellist was fixed to fill in the values of the active channellist and to make sure that the channellist is set in the preferences when it gets a new name.

Kalva is a Lightweight Video Application

It provides a simple to use videorecorder using MEncoder to do the real work. You can schedule movies or serials. Kalva can import channellists from e.g. xawtv or xawtv4 and generate a knew one using scantv. You can edit and store that list. You might as well download a channellist from www.kde-files.org (KHotNewStuff). Kalva has a DCOP interface. This is meant as a convinient way to support recording for external apps like xmltv browsers (f.i. KTvSchedule). If You want to use the DCOP interface You can push Kalva into KDE's systemtray (works just like with JuK or amaroK). ktvapp is a simple to use and simple to setup videorecorder for the KDE. It is using MEncoder from the MPlayer package to do the real work. You can schedule a movierecording by choosing the date from a calender (will be passed to at) and a serial recording by choosing the days of the week (feeds your crontab). Save and download option for hardware profiles and quality profiles (KNewstuff) are planned for later releases.

The sources of Kalva have recently moved to kde-svn (trunc/playground/multimedia/kalva).

kdesvn-build version 0.97 was just released.

What is it?
----------

kdesvn-build is a Perl script that can download and build KDE for you from
theKDE Subversion source repository. It includes many features to make the experience as easy as possible. It is also highly customizable, although all of the options have a sane default f or those that don't like twiddling knobs.

Some of the features of kdesvn-build include:
* Automatically checks out or updates modules from Subversion as appropriate.
* Supports "global" options that apply to every module, but can be overridd
en on a per module basis.
* Has support for checking out specific branches of a module.
* Shows the estimated progress of the build when possible, and shows the amount of time taken for a module.
* kdesvn-build tries very hard to build a module successfully. It will eve
n go so far as to automatically re-run the process starting from make -f Makefile.cvs.
* Can resume from a previous failed run.
* kdesvn-build has excellent support for Unsermake, the improved automake replacement. It will even automatically download if for you if necessary.
* The configuration file will expand tilde (~) to your home directory where appropriate, so you can use shell-style paths.
* Automatically sets up a so-called srcdir != builddir arrangement to kee
p the source directory clean.
* Command logging. Logs are dated and numbered so that you always have a log of a script run. A special symlink called latest is created in the log directory that points to the logs from the last run.
* You can checkout only a portion of a module if you'd like. For example,
you could checkout only taglib from kdesupport. The admin directory from kde-common is imported automatically if necessary.
* "Pretend" mode. You can see what steps kdesvn-build would perform without actually changing anything.
