/e/OS 2.9 has been released for devices on both official and community builds, providing new features, security enhancements, and performance upgrades. The update features support for Google Pixel 8 on AOSP 14, the capability to export Notes as .md files, improved Parental Controls with Mullvad DNS, enhanced compatibility for third-party applications, and various bug fixes across Mail, App Lounge, Notes, and additional areas.

The Mail application experienced accessibility issues for certain users as a result of the 2.9-OTA update. The update encompasses several bug fixes, including a corrected icon display for PWA and open-source applications, enhanced privacy scores, and the capability to showcase app details in both open-source and PWA modes. Furthermore, the local mode can be initiated independently of a connection or in the event of a service disruption. The update incorporates Android security patches that are current as of March 2025.

Warning

Due to an issue(now fixed) in the Mail app, released with the 2.9-OTA update, the mails were inaccessible for certain users. Request all to kindly update the Mail app to version 6.711-2 via App Lounge as soon as possible to avoid disruption.

  • Mullvad DNS All has been implemented as Parental Control's default DNS and  Kids DNS0 is implemented as a fallback.

  • location is now requested from supported Hotspot by default, so now you can be located while connected to the train's Wi-Fi for instance

  • icon display for PWA and Open Source apps has been fixed
  • common apps are not visible anymore when disabled in the settings and are displayed systematically among searched results when enabled in the settings
  • F-Droid and Google Play Store links open in App Lounge
  • the Privacy Score has been removed from the search and category views as it was impacting Exodus too much
  • in Open Source and PWA mode it's possible to display apps' detail page
  • all pending updates for Open Source apps are now taken into account
