Debian GNU/Linux was started in 1993 by Ian Murdock and was meant to be a small Linux distribution developed and maintained by hackers. Instead, now in 2004 it's a big distribution with a well-organised community of developers and users. Currently Debian GNU/Linux is one of the best maintained and full distributions - it has over 8700 packages. Offering one of the best support systems and having one of the largest online communities makes Debian GNU/Linux a member of the 'Top Distros' chart.
