Proxmox Virtual Environment 3.1 has been released. Here the announcement:
Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH, developer of the open source server virtualization management solution Proxmox Virtual Environment (Proxmox VE), today announced the release of version 3.1. Version 3.1 comes with new features and services including two new package repositories, updates via GUI, SPICE, the new GlusterFS storage plugin, and a significant price drop on the community subscription service from monthly EUR 9,90 to EUR 4,16.
New Enterprise Repository
Proxmox Server Solutions - maintainer of the Proxmox VE repositories – introduces two new package repositories named “pve-enterprise” and “pve-no-subscription”. Beginning with Proxmox VE 3.1, the default repository is the Proxmox VE Enterprise repository. It allows secure access to stable updates, security patches and bug-fixes and is available to subscription users only. Proxmox VE users who do not want to use the subscription service can access the packages via the “pve-no-subscription” repository. These packages are not heavily tested, therefore the No-subscription repository is not recommended for production servers.
Updates via GUI
The newly integrated update feature shows the administrator all available updates, security patches and bug-fixes via GUI and also via email notification. Refreshing the update list and upgrading the system can be done with just a few clicks. Changelogs are visible in the GUI. Upgrading via command line (CLI) is still possible.
SPICE (Simple Protocol for Independent Computing Environments)
Spice achieves a user experience similar to an interaction with a local machine, while trying to offload most of the intensive CPU and GPU tasks to the client. Spice is suitable for both LAN and WAN usage, without compromising on the user experience. Using Spice on Proxmox VE is easy and secure: It is integrated in the cluster environment, the user- and authentication system, and all traffic is fully encrypted. Proxmox VE 3.1 introduces Spice as a technology preview. The VNC console is still available and the default.
GlusterFS storage plugin
This new storage plugin supports the use of GlusterFS volumes. It uses a fuse mount point for volume management (create/delete/snapshot,rollback,...) but Qemu accesses the virtual disk images directly to get best performance.
Significant Price Drop for Community Subscription
With the new release Proxmox permanently drops the pricing for its Community subscription service from EUR 9,90 to now EUR 4,16 per month and CPU-socket. This signifies a 58 percent price drop. The entry-level subscription enables access to the new Enterprise repository and the stable software updates.
“With the new subscription pricing and the stable Enterprise repository we improved our service for our enterprise users. The new service allows IT professionals and businesses to rely on a stable and secure virtualization solution to run on production servers. This allows them to benefit from open source software on the one hand and from stable update services and guaranteed support on the other hand,” explains Martin Maurer, CEO of Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH.
