Canonical has made the announcement that Legacy Support, an add-on for Ubuntu Pro, is now available. This add-on extends the security and support coverage for Ubuntu LTS releases to a period of twelve years.

The add-on is available for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and later versions, and it provides standard security maintenance on the main Ubuntu repository for a period of five years. Ubuntu Pro offers ten years of security maintenance on both the main and universe repositories, giving businesses and end users access to a vast library of open-source software that is both secure and free. Through the purchase of the Legacy Support add-on, paying customers of Ubuntu Pro have the opportunity to acquire an additional two years of security maintenance and support.

Because it may involve updating the entire software stack that is running on top of it, the transition to the most recent operating system (OS) presents challenges for large production systems that have been in operation for a long time. The Legacy Support add-on from Canonical provides continuous vulnerability management for critical, high, and medium Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) across all software packages that are shipped with Ubuntu. It offers 12 years of timely security fixes and support through its support and maintenance services. These essential fixes are actively backported by Canonical's security team to all of the Ubuntu LTS releases that are supported. This provides businesses and end users with the assurance that they can maintain the security of their systems without having to perform a significant upgrade.

When incidents take place or when additional expertise is required to address complex issues, support is offered as a service that is triggered by the user. Canonical support is available for a variety of purposes, including guidance, bug fixes, break fixes, and troubleshooting. The coverage of Ubuntu Pro for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will expire in April 2024. Legacy Support enables organizations that are operating their systems on top of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS to obtain an additional two years of expanded security maintenance as well as phone and ticket support.
